What Does Pasture-Raised Chicken Mean?
At YFM our chicken is raised on a pasture. That term, pasture-raised, is showing up more often, but, for some, it can still feel a bit unclear.
At its core, pasture-raised means chickens are raised outdoors on pasture, where they have access to fresh air, space to move, and natural forage like grasses and insects. It’s a more natural way of raising birds compared to conventional systems.
How We Raise Our Chickens
Our pasture-raised chickens are raised locally in Armstrong, BC, just outside of Vernon.
During the warmer months, the birds are out on pasture where they can comfortably live outdoors. With our climate, this is the time of year when conditions are best for both the animals and the quality of the meat.
Keeping things local means we know exactly how the chickens are raised and who is raising them. It also helps reduce transportation and keeps the process close to home.
What They’re Fed
Feed plays a big role in the final product.
Our chickens are raised on a non-GMO diet that is corn and soy free, along with natural forage from pasture. This supports steady, natural growth and contributes to the overall quality of the meat.
We also raise our chickens without added hormones or antibiotics.
What You’ll Notice in the Meat
There are a few differences people often notice when they try pasture-raised chicken for the first time.
The meat tends to have a deeper colour and a firmer texture. The flavour is often richer, especially when compared to more conventional chicken.
These differences come from how the birds are raised, how much they move, and what they eat.
