Understanding rising beef prices in Canada—and why we're choosing quality over convenience.
If you've noticed beef prices climbing over the past few years, you're not imagining it. Across Canada, beef is more expensive than it has been in recent history, and for many local butcher shops and farms, sourcing high-quality cattle has become increasingly difficult.
At Yankee Flats Meats, we've had a lot of customers asking why our beef selection has been smaller lately or why some cuts have been unavailable. The short answer is simple: we're committed to sourcing local, pasture-raised, non-implant beef, and right now that isn't easy to find.
Rather than lower our standards, we've chosen to stay true to our production philosophy—even if that means having less beef available in the short term.
Why is beef so expensive in Canada?
There isn't one single reason. Instead, several factors have come together over the past few years to create a tighter beef supply and higher prices.
Canada's cattle herd is currently at one of its lowest levels in decades. Years of drought, rising feed costs, labour shortages, and economic uncertainty have caused many producers to reduce their herd sizes or leave the industry altogether. At the same time, consumer demand for beef has remained strong.
Fewer cattle combined with continued demand naturally means higher prices throughout the supply chain—from farmers and processors all the way to local butcher shops like ours.
It's a challenging time for everyone involved in Canadian agriculture, and rebuilding the national cattle herd takes years, not months.
What's happening here in British Columbia?
Here in BC, the challenge is even greater.
British Columbia has a relatively small cattle industry compared to provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan. That means there are fewer local animals available to begin with, and even fewer that meet the production standards we're looking for.
Many retailers have filled that gap by sourcing beef from larger Canadian supply chains or importing product from countries like Australia and New Zealand. There's absolutely a place for those products, and they help keep beef available for consumers.
But that's not the direction we've chosen.
Why Yankee Flats Meats is waiting
From day one, our goal has been to build relationships with local farmers who raise animals in a way that aligns with our values.
That means sourcing cattle that are:
- Raised by local BC farmers.
- Raised free-range with a focus on animal welfare.
- Never treated with growth-promoting implants.
- Raised with transparency from farm to table.
Growth-promoting implants are commonly used in conventional beef production across North America. They're approved by Health Canada and are designed to improve feed efficiency and help cattle gain weight more efficiently. While they're widely accepted within the industry, we've made the decision to source cattle that have never received them because that's the kind of beef we believe in and what many of our customers are specifically looking for.
That choice naturally limits the number of farms we can buy from, especially during a time when quality local cattle are already in short supply.
Could we fill our shelves with other beef?
Yes.
But it wouldn't reflect the standards we've built Yankee Flats Meats on.
Looking ahead
The good news is that this is only temporary.
One of the most exciting steps we've taken this year is beginning to raise our own cattle. While those animals still need time to grow, they'll begin coming available this fall and winter, helping us create a more reliable supply of the local, high-quality beef our customers know and trust.
It's a long-term investment, but one we believe is worth making—for our customers, our farm, and our local food system.
In the meantime, don't overlook pork and chicken
While our beef supply is more limited right now, our pasture-raised chicken and heritage pork have never looked better.
In fact, if you're looking for an alternative to your favourite beef meals, pork is one of the easiest swaps you can make.
Our pasture-raised heritage pork steaks grill beautifully, pork shoulder makes incredible pulled pork, and our pork chops offer rich flavour that stands up well to many of the same recipes you'd normally make with beef.
Choosing these locally raised proteins also means you're continuing to support the farmers and food producers right here in our community.
Every purchase is a vote for the kind of food system you want to see.
When you choose locally raised meat from BC farmers, you're helping keep family farms in business, supporting responsible animal husbandry, strengthening local food security, and investing in agriculture that stays close to home.
Thank you for supporting local agriculture
We know it can be disappointing when your favourite cut isn't available.
We feel that disappointment too.
But we'd rather be honest about why than quietly lower our standards.
Thank you for choosing local, asking questions about where your food comes from, and supporting a small family business that's committed to doing things the right way, even when it's the harder path.
We're excited for what's ahead, and we can't wait to bring more of our own locally raised beef to your family's table in the months to come.
